April 2007 Newsletter

Notes from the April 7th Membership Meeting, by Jimmy Rasmussen:

The monthly meeting was held at the Delta Lake Fire Dept 7:00 p.m.; 25 members were in attendance.
The meeting started off with Mary Jo Beach representing WODZ/Oldiez96, presenting the club with vital information about hosting this year's Friday Night Cruise In at St John's Church on East Dominick Street. She introduced the new DJ to host the event, Bob Kane, and explained how cooperative he will be in promoting our particular event. She went on to explain how the DJ would get fully involved with the Tappet Twirlers on our evening of fun. He will gladly let us pass out flyers for any of our up coming events, as long as it does not conflict with another event Oldiez may be hosting at the same time. The package sounded very interesting, with air time on 4 different radio stations all summer long, identifying the cruise in time, place, and the fun were are going to have. They will also bring the 1976 firebird to the event that they are promoting to give away at the end of the season. Mary Jo spent several minutes explaining the benefits of the package, and left several flyers mapping out what will actually transpire. The club thanked her for her presentation. After she left, there was a short discussion and a motion was made and seconded to incorporate Oldiez 96 to our Friday Night Cruise Ins.
In conjunction with this topic, there was discussion on the need for additional volunteers to set up tear down, and do the fifty-fifty, as well as the ice cream stand. A sign up list was laid out on the table and several members stepped up. The president and board members will be reviewing the list to set up the committees and start the work. It is going to be very user friendly; the work will be well disbursed through out the summer; everyone who volunteers will have time to enjoy the event. No long term commitments will be endured by any one member; the theme remains to have fun and enjoy our great hobby.
We are looking into food vendors for our Cruise Ins; a few different names came up and they will be contacted to see which ones will be mutually beneficial to our event.
Another subject that was brought up was the selling of "T" shirts. Larry Natarelli mentioned that he would look into this- more to follow regarding cost vs. retail. This will determine the practicality of taking on this venture again.
Sponsors are still needed to fulfill empty slots for events. Any and all are greatly needed and appreciated. If you contact a potential sponsor, please contact Rick Aiello so he can add them to the list. This needs to be a group effort.
We also need raffle "give aways" to support the Cruise Ins. Anything thing you may have at home, even old articles, die cast models, pieces of history, anything- we can use to give away- and yes we can knock on doors to local businesses to ask for their help.
Plaques are being made by Dick Bronson to present to the sponsors of specific events, and we are looking into how we can get the pictures in the plaques as quickly as possible, enabling the sponsors to display them in their place of business.
Brian Getbehead said he would be able to do the engraving for the bottom metal plates.
Brian Esch is willing to have a meeting with Jim Donovan, who is head of the Canal Fest Activities, to help coordinate our event. More to follow.
Another subject that was brought up was the Cruise International at the casino. Mr. Erickson was the contact for this event, and apparently was thrilled to hear that the Tappet Twirlers would volunteer their time to make this event a success; in return they would make us a success. "Success is judged by many, not one", Jimmy Rasmussen. Here again, we need the help and cooperation of club members- more will follow. The meeting for April was well received, many good things came about, and I sense a new life for this great car club.
Another piece of the news letter concerns dues: Brian Getbehead presented a good point- a three part receipt book, to be used in collection of the dues. Three people were named to be the recipients of the dues: Dave Esch, Miles Thompson, and Brian Getbehead. These are the people to search out in respect to dues payment, of which you will receive a receipt from the three part book.
More interesting stuff! Larry Natarelli is now involved with the Rome Chamber of Commerce. This is good for local functions with the city and community. There again, if Larry gets involved and needs support for this as a club we need to be there.
We need to look into the future for the taste of the arts, not a sole club function but as a city/ community function. We need to show support for local events- there's no place like home and we are part of Rome- 53 years worth, let's be there!
On a personal note, I am asking for club support in an event that is coming up June 9th. A personal friend and co worker of my son Justin and Laurie, at the Wal-Mart Pharmacy here in Rome, has been diagnosed with breast cancer, which has traveled to the lungs. Pam Litler is the woman whom this benefit is for. What is being asked is that if we could, as a group, bring our cars to the Taberg Fireman's Field Pavilion on this day. Drivers of the cars will receive free food and drink for their suppot; passengers are requested to donate to benefit for Pam's cause. Of course any donation would be gladly received. There will be bands- music of all varieties all day long. The benefit starts at 1:00 til??? This is a re-occurrence for Pam. Any thing we can do as group to draw attention for her cause, would be greatly appreciated; if you have any questions or need contact information please call 338-7911 option 0 ask for Laurie/ Kelly; or email probe2853@aol.com. I personally thank you if we could gather a group of cars in support, Jim Rasmussen.
We look forward to the Rome Home Show this month; hopefully we can make a decent showing to support our community, after all we are the Tappet Twirlers- Rome's finest!

Notes from the Car Club Association Meeting held April 10th by Jimmy Rasmussen:
Five members of the Tappet Twirlers attended the Central Car Club Association meeting April 10th at Barbegallo's in Syracuse: Nick Lombardo, Larry Natarelli, Jim Mortis, Dick Bronson, and Jim Rasmussen.
The main topic of discussion was the Syracuse Nationals; Bob O'Connor was in attendance, who heads up the event, along with the number of car clubs that support the event. Much discussion was made about the cruise from the event to downtown Syracuse, and the impact it may have on the over-all venue coming into the event at the fair grounds. The thought was that if it was held on Saturday, it would take away from the spectators entering the fair grounds, thus loosing the revenue needed to make the nationals successful. Some discussion was made, and at this point they are working on having the cruise happen Thursday prior to opening the event on Friday...at this point it seemed more beneficial, thus keeping full concentration on the event Friday thru Sunday.
Also to those who are familiar with the program "my classic car", Dennis Gage will be at the nationals this year. He will be conducting an interview with Dennis Connor, who is the president of the Central NY Car Association. Dennis Gage comes to the nationals with a heavy price tag, so you can see why having every possible entry into the event is important for the success of the Syracuse Nationals. Mr. O'Connor held up several magazines showing the exposure the Syracuse Nationals is getting, including over seas- in a British publication. He works very hard for the success of this event, which leads me to our role in supporting that success.
We need to start compiling a list of cars willing to partake in the Cargil Building this year. We have at this point 25 openings. Anyone who has not had the opportunity to park in-doors in a controlled environment doesn't know how convenient it is. Those that wish to consider this will be asked to sign up at the next meeting as it will be necessary to forward it on to the planning committee of the Cargil Building.
If any other information is needed, you can contact me, Jimmy Rasmussen, at jlrasmu72@aol.com
I will be glad to get answers to any questions, with the help of the board, the officers, what ever it takes, we will get answers.
